The lead meets an interesting cast of characters who welcomes him into a safe house with queer people, other social outcasts, and possibly spirits. Shimanami Tasogare features a lead who is being bullied in school and facing social ostracization for being gay. Despite being nonfiction, it's mostly cute and lighthearted with trans advocacy issues mixed in. Hanayome wa Motodanshi is an autobiographical manga about a trans woman who met the love of her life who supported her through coming out to her family, transitioning, and eventually marriage. Knights of Sidonia has nonbinary and trans main characters, unfortunately the English translation gendered Izana. I do read lots of manga though, and here are some very good representations of LGBT+ people: The only new shows I watched in 2016 were Boueibu season 2 and YoI. with good queer representation? For those of you who've seen the works listed above, how do you think they compare to YOI? I'm curious what everyone's thoughts are. I've also been told that the Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha series has canonically gay female characters, but I haven't yet seen it for myself.Ĭan anyone recommend other series/movies/etc. I'm also currently rewatching Hunter x Hunter with a friend, which I recall as having a bit of queer subtext and some implied trans characters. Side note: I'd say this is the closest to YOI of everything I've seen so far, because it doesn't have any high-stakes drama or action, the plot is very character-driven, and the representation is explicitly and canonically queer while being respectful and non-stereotypical. Overall quality: Personally, I'm not a huge romance fan, but I thought it was good. Probably worth watching on that basis alone.įanservice: I recall some scenes involving the main characters making out. Queer representation: Holy shit, an example of actual BL that doesn't rely on stereotypes, seme/uke dynamics, and blatantly non-consensual crap! It's just a straight-up romance between two guys. I know I said non-yaoi, but this is the exception. 7/10.ĭoukyuusei (romance, slice of life, BL, school). I had to force myself to persevere through some mediocre parts, but the episodes are under 15 minutes so it's doable. The show is decent, writing and animation are okay.

Without the gay subtext I'd say it's pretty close to conventional shonen. A Japanese dub called Spritpact with longer episodes is currently airing on Crunchyroll, but people seem to be reacting badly to it so I'm not sure if it's any good. Overall quality: Unfortunately I've only been able to find so-so fansubs, but they're mostly good enough. Queer representation: I'd say its gay subtext is definitely closer to queerbait than a genuine representation of a gay relationship, but it's more overt than other queerbait while also being less fanservice oriented.įanservice: Two guys kiss, but for a contrived reason related to magic.

Ling Qi (action, supernatural) is actually Chinese, but it's obviously heavily influenced by Japanese anime. Tentatively 9/10, but I need to rewatch it. Overall quality: Fantastic writing, really interesting setting.

They're all underage, so I found it a bit weird and didn't really linger on it. Might also show girls kissing but I don't remember. Hover for mild spoilers.įanservice: Shows boys kissing with tongue. However, it doesn't quite treat its queer relationships as fully legitimate. Queer representation: Features multiple gay relationships with both men and women. I still rate it 6/10, but I'd give it at least 7/10 without the ending, and it could have scored 8 or 9 with a good ending. Overall quality: Pretty good until the last episode, when it turns into a baffling mess of confused nonsense. Doesn't fall into the classic queerbait or BL stereotypes.įanservice: Two on-screen kisses between men. Queer representation: It features two male characters in a romantic context and is known for showing two on-screen kisses between men. No 6 (action, sci-fi) probably comes up the most when looking for anime like YOI. Below are the shows I've watched post-YOI that I see as having some kind of queer subtext or explicit representation. Obviously my first stop was BL/yaoi, but then I remembered it's mostly fujoshi-oriented rape porn and gave up on that. I've deliberately avoided mentioning plot points and specific characters, and things that might give away plot points are in spoiler tags.Īfter watching YOI, I went on a binge trying to find other anime with gay characters. Possible Mild Spoiler Alert: Below I list some very general details about certain series (such as which series show gay kisses or relationships, etc.).
